Don't let your dream home become a nightmare!

Buying a new home involves making decisions that can affect the lives of each member of your family for years. Most homebuyers spend more time picking out paint colors than they do thinking about indoor air quality. Yet, the EPA and most health organizations warn that the air in our homes can make us very sick or worse.

Today's homes are built to be energy efficient...which is a good thing if you control the pollutants generated by normal living. No one would consider eliminating exhaust fans or building a fireplace without a chimney... yet that is what we do when we fail to control the entry of air from the soil that surrounds our home's foundation.

The air can contain chemicals we use to treat our lawns, to prevent wood destroying insects from damaging our wood framing or methane from materials that may have been disposed of in years past. Physicians are seeing an alarming increase in the number of children and adults who develop allergies. It takes only one square inch of mold to release 500,000 spores into the air we breathe! These spores can incubate in the soil of a crawl space or the drainage systems beneath a basement floor. The simple act of turning on a bathroom fan can draw these spores into the home.

Of all soil gases, by far the most dangerous is Radon. There is no scientific doubt that exposure to high Radon gas levels can cause lung cancer. EPA estimates that 14,000 to 20,000 people die each year as a result of such exposure. ALL homes should be tested for air quality. The state of Indiana is classified as a Zone I Radon Area which means that the average home in the state exceeds the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/l. A pico curie ("peeko curee") is a unit of measurement for radiation. Living in a home at 4.0 pCi/l is the equivalent of each family member smoking half a pack of cigarettes every day.
